Gospel Primer for Kids – Part 1: God’s Glory
Jonathan and I are meeting weekly. In our first meeting, we reviewed the first sections of the Gospel Primer book. Here are my notes for that meeting.
Intro Verse / Impact of the Gospel (pgs 13, 14):
The gospel, also called the good news is important. Paul, the guy that wrote a lot of the New Testament to different churches, wants these people to hear the gospel.
What is the gospel? That’s the point, that’s what we’re meeting here to learn. We’ll discuss this for weeks, because the gospel is the most important parts about who God is, what he’s done and how we fit in.
Romans 1:15 (NIrV) So I really want to preach the good news also to you who live in Rome.
1 Cor 15:1 (NIrV) Brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the good news I preached to you. You received it and have put your faith in it.
Phil 1:7 (NIrV) It is right for me to feel this way about all of you. I love you with all my heart. I may be held by chains, or I may be standing up for the truth of the good news. Either way, all of you share in God’s grace together with me.
The Gospel for Today (pgs 57-58):
For this section, have him read and talk about the verses using these items as the main point for each. Use this as an opportunity to teach him how to find verses in the BIble. Don’t expect to get through every single verse here, but as you remove them, try to take the logical progression of he’s great and we need Him for obedience
The Glory of God:
God is ginormous
Is 40:12 (NIrV) Who has measured the oceans by using the palm of his hand? Who has used the width of his hand to mark off the sky? Who has measured out the dust of the earth in a basket? Who has weighed the mountains on scales? Who has weighed the hills in a balance?
God is completely good and perfect
Deut 32:3,4 (NIrV) 3 I will make known the name of the Lord. Praise God! How great he is! 4 He is the Rock. His works are perfect. All of his ways are right. He is faithful. He doesn’t do anything wrong. He is honest and fair.
He gives us everything that we like
1 Tim 6:17 (NIrV) Command people who are rich in this world not to be proud. Tell them not to put their hope in riches. Wealth is so uncertain. Command those who are rich to put their hope in God. He richly provides us with everything to enjoy.
We NEED Him for everything
Acts 17:28 (NIrV) ‘In him we live and move and exist.’ As some of your own poets have also said, ‘We are his children.’
This God deserves our affection (love)
Rev 4:11 (NIrV)”You are worthy, our Lord and God! You are worthy to receive glory and honor and power. You are worthy because you created all things. They were created and they exist. That is the way you planned it.”
We should tell Him
1 Cor 10:31 (NIrV) So eat and drink and do everything else for the glory of God.
We do this in obedience to Him
Deut 5:29 (NIrV) But I wish they would always have respect for me in their hearts. I wish they would always obey all of my commands. Then things would go well with them and their children forever.
The Impact of the Gospel:
Ask these questions; see if he can apply what we’ve talked about to himself;
The gospel is a longer story about who God is, what he’s done and how we fit in. So in what we read today:
- Who is God?
This one should be answered with Deut 32:3,4 statements - What did He show us that He’s done?
This one should be answered with 1 Tim 6:17 & Acts 4:17 statements - How do we respond?
This one should be answered with Rev 4:11 & 1 Cor 10:31 statements. Try to avoid getting hung up on obedience. Kids will want to go there cause that’s all they’ve been taught, but we’re getting to grace and don’t want to get hung up there.
