a place to read my thoughts …it's scary here

What a Way to Go.

There has been a lot written and spoken lately about death. Maybe it is because we have seen several popular entertainment figures pass away in the last few weeks.  I am certain that there is nothing at all that I can add to the discussion, so I’m not going to talk about how people seem to forget that just a few weeks ago we talked about a certain unnamed member of the Jackson 5 as a serial child molester.

What I do want to talk about is Steve McNair.  McNair was a quarterback that broke the race barrier for his position.  He was “one of the good guys” and was one of my favorites.  He was an ironman and worked as hard or harder than anyone out there.  He was a very likable football player.

In case you are wondering, Steve McNair was shot 4 times by a girl that he’d been dating (I call her a girl because she was only a couple of years older than his oldest son).  His wife knew nothing of the affair.  The girl killed him, because she was afraid that he was cheating on her.  She then pointed the gun and killed herself.  She was found dead, laying at his feet.

I bring this up, because I read some quotes recently that gave such a perspective on how people view sin and morality.  They reminded me how amazingly different man’s view of sin is from God’s view.

“I’m concerned about his legacy,” Word says. “I wish it were different. I hope we take the entire legacy and keep it in our hearts. He was much more than the circumstances present.”

Nashville will get through this, Walker says, because it’s a loving community. They’ll get through it, he believes, because 36 years can’t be defined by a few final mistakes.

We are defined by a few mistakes.  We are defined by the mistake we all make at one point to look at the Lord of the Universe and sin against Him.  God deserves a perfect and complete devotion to Him and none of us give it.  So then we are defined for all eternity by our response to that mistake.  Whether it be resting our lives and devoting our lives to the person and work of Jesus Christ or not.

We would like it that God grades on a curve.  Guess what?  He doesn’t.  Don’t forget it.
